Summer food!

Don't you love summer food? Corn and watermelon and cucumbers galore?
I remember sitting at the dinner table with Jenny, Will and Amy and discussing who ate their corn left to right, round and round or totally random bites. The other night we were eating it and I realized I have one of each! Eve actually prefers hers in "corn strips" cut from the cob, she is missing too many front teeth this year. Henry always always always tries munching it while we are husking it, then he refuses to try it once it is cooked-- Silly Boy!

This week.

I'm pretty much too tired to type. Here is the quick week run-down. I spent today at Cub Scout Day Camp. I love little boys. What fun they are. Here is what I learned:
  • Boys pick their noses, wipe their noses on their shirts and love potty jokes.
  • Boys eat and get food all over their faces and don't notice/bother to wipe it off.
  • Boys "adjust themselves" regularly. It is apparently normal.
  • Boys drink water and then dribble it out to cool themselves. Ok.
  • Boys are tender and feel sad when things don't go their way.
  • Boys reach out and are willing to help a friend.
  • Boys will eat things off the ground if it is yummy enough.
  • Boys like to laugh, play and know they are loved. They love a silly den leader.
  • My boy is just perfect and normal!
Best quote of the day: Scenario: One overly loving boy is hugging and kissing on another, the recipient shouts "Please stop! This is akward!" For some reason I laugh out loud just typing it. Is it as funny as I think? (Or am I just tooo tired?)
Other news: Evie read her first chapter book this week. A Magic Tree House book, she finished it in a day and a half! Hooray for readers. (and no, she doesn't have new glasses, both my girls WANT glasses so they'll wear anything just for looks!)
We started our Summer "Monday Mailday". Be watching for letters, we'll be writing and mailing every Monday... and watching our own mailbox... please respond. Please?
Oh, and in addition to having a major skunk smell in our basement for a week and getting a tad behind on my laundry (eww. stinky!) I've now decided I may never set foot in our "sunroom" (aka: the room where bugs go to die- but this one was alive.)

Oh, and for the few of you that noticed my kids in Sunday clothes making strawberry jam... I figured it was all washable... right?

5 ways I can tell it is summer.

  1. My dishwasher is always full. Of cups.
  2. My cupboards and fridge are practically bare, the day after a major BJ's run.
  3. I have emptied the kitchen trash twice today.
  4. There are flipflops, damp towels, art projects, books, cheese stick wrappers and half eaten bananas (see #2) everywhere. Everywhere!
  5. The kids are wide awake long before I would normally be prying their cozy warm bodies out of bed to get ready for school. (Why oh why??)
I love summer! Michael is at Cub Scout Day camp this week and the girls (and Henry) and I are getting into the summer groove... trying to figure out how to be outside without being eaten alive, how to read enough books and do a little math each day, how much tv is just enough (for me to stay sane) and not enough (for cute brains to rot). If any of you amazingly smart readers have advice to offer on any of these things, I'm happy to listen. I'm keeping the games on the kitchen counter (even though they feel cluttery and are driving me bananas) because I want games and togetherness to be a part of our summer.

Here is a random change of subject (because I have no summer pictures yet and cute Jam pictures...) : We made Strawberry Jam for the teachers and support staff this year. I'm loving it on warm wheat toast, and the bonus is that we used (shhh) frozen berries! It is great and we can do it in December if we want! Hooray! Isn't it awesome how I have kids with such different haircolors? I love that middle picture! Would you even guess they are related? Genetics crack me up!

Bring on the gluten.

The blood test results came back today and my 4 oldest kiddos tested Negative for Celiac's. Woo Hoo! I was really surprised. With such a strong family presence of Celiac's and lots of tummy aches, I figured somebody around here would have it too... I was working out in my head what to pack in school lunches, what to start putting away for food storage and how on earth we could make Grandma Cutler's Thanksgiving rolls G-free! I guess we don't have to worry about it! What a blessing. ......I wish my nieces and nephews and Amy were so lucky. :(

Why Cry?

I'm weepy. Yesterday was the last day of school. I'm not sure why, but I got all teary watching Eve and Michael run to the bus stop.... Then I looked at Janey home with me and got weepy over that. (I'm not pregnant. Don't worry. Just an emotional basketcase.)

At the end of the day Jane and I went over to the school to drop of Strawberry Jam to all the teachers. It was fun, I love the atmosphere in a school. I decided to bring the kids home with me rather than ride the bus, but we stayed a minute and watched one of my favorite "end of the year" rituals... After all the students have boarded the buses, the entire school staff- teachers, secretaries, specialists, nurses, librarians, custodial staff--- everybody, stands on the lawn next to the first bus in the loop and begins waving and cheering. All ten or so buses drive past honking to beat the band. Eve calls it a HonkParty!

Last year I was picking the kids up and I got all choked up watching it. This year I positioned myself and the kids in the van right next to the first bus so we could watch the parade. When the last bus had pulled away, and the honking was heard in the distance I wiped the tears from my face and said "I'm crying! I don't know why!" and all the kids said the same thing. Poor kids get their weepiness from me.

Today Mom and I took them to get bloodwork done. It was a mess. Lily went first and of course cried-- and all the biggers cried watching her and feeling sad for all of them... And of course, if my 4 kids are crying, I had a tear or two sneak out... The "best" part was that somewhere along the way they have learned to sing the ABC's to try and distract themselves... so here we are, 4 kids sobbing out the ABC's (over and over and over!). Once Eve had her turn and realized it wasn't so bad, Michael and Jane did fine! We all deserved ice cream. So did Karen, our phlebotomist.

I was trying for a picture of each of the kids this afternoon, face-on. This is the cooperation I get. Sheesh.
What a couple of corndogs!

I kept meaning to blog...

But we were busy doing this:

Hooray! G&G C. are here visiting! We have spent time reading, tickling, chatting, and playing games! games! games!

We went to a cubscout picnic. If you look closely, you can see, big tree, boys inside of tree, boys bolting out of tree when someone shouted hotdogs! :)
We have had buckets of rain, but Friday the weather was perfect! We went to Annapolis and took a tour of the Statehouse. It is fascinting. We saw a cannon that was brought here in 1634. 1634!!! As we entered the statehouse we were greeted at the door by our Governor! We missed the photo op so posed in front of his portrait. He was very friendly! Michael sat in the chair that Obama sat in and had his shoes shined and we all stood in the spot where George Washington resigned his Commission as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. Very Cool! Our tour guide was excellent. We had a picnic on the lawn and then enjoyed the charm of Annapolis. It is such a cute area!
On our way home we stopped at Ft. Mc Henry. This might be one of my favorite sights to see. It is easy to imagine yourself there, the British ships right in the harbor and the guns and cannons at the Fort. After a short film strip, they open the curtains to the Star Spangled Banner flying high above the fort and the sound of a Men's Chorus singing our national anthem. I'm pretty sure you'd have to be made of stone not to get chills. ;) We arrived in time for the changing of the flag and our kids were able to help catch and fold the enormous flag! Did you know the original flag that waved the morning Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner was 30 feet x 42 feet! Huge!

Happy Flag Day!

Ice cream and Bubble gum.

Jane is 8.
She is funny, clever, smart, thoughtful, kind, creative, a deep-thinker. She is quick to help and aware of the needs and feelings of those around her.
Early this spring we noticed a worrisome trend. Our happy-go-lucky girl had become Sad. More than sad. I began keeping track of the number of times she told me she was "bad" or "horrible". It was heart-breakingly often. Her typical response to a simple, kind reminder (Please chew with your mouth closed...) was to break down crying, "I'm such a bad girl. I'm a horrible bad girl."

I went to the school to watch, to see what I could see... and what I saw didn't surprise me a bit. Jane was cheerful! She was surrounded by friends, boys and girls. She was laughing, having fun, learning. But, she came home a different child.

Now, lots of kids have sad days, lots of kids go through things. We know that. In fact, just last night we had the "Why you go to public school" discussion with one of our kids. But this was different. This wasn't a specific bullying event, or a bad teacher (her teacher was amazing.) This was a slow deterioration of Jane's feelings of self worth. The child who used to bounce back was becoming slower and slower at picking up the pieces and carrying on.

The answer of how to help her came very clearly: We needed her home, to build her up.

Three months later: Jane is Jane again. We have found her! I feel like I have my daughter back. She is normal, some days are happy and sometimes she feels sad, but she doesn't stay sad for long, I think she is remembering how special she is. Here is a recent incident that told me we had done the right thing:

We walked into Wal-Mart. Typically I have been having Jane help me write the list and cross things off as we go. This morning though, we had rushed out the door without time to make a list. As we walked into the store I turned to her and said, "Ok Jane, What is on our list?" 3 months ago, she would have looked at me, stricken, and began to wimper then cry, "I didn't write a list, nobody told me to, I'm sorry!!!" Full on sadness would ensue and she would eventually tell me how bad she is.

This day though, she turned to me, with that sparkle in her eye that had been missing and said as quickly as if she was reading the list in her hand, "Ice cream-- and bubble gum."

And then it was my turn to cry in Wal-Mart.

Boy had I missed my Jane, and boy am I lucky to have her with me everyday.

Huh? Dora gets a new look.

Extreme Makeover:

Why?

I know I'm resistant to change. (understatement) but really? Was this necessary?

Oh Henry!

Someone asked me last week what Henry likes to play with... I couldn't come up with anything specific. Cars? Trains? Everything he isn't supposed to mess with? Then it hit me-- Sticks. This boy loves a stick. He swings it with all the energy of a Master Jedi.
He is in charge. When he isn't, say, someone tries to take the remote control or hose away, he lets us know he is unhappy!
He loves mud. The day I took this picture I opened the door and my girls literally pranced out of the house to the yard and danced around gathering flowers. He went straight to a mud puddle and plopped himself right down and started splashing!

All Boy. All Good.

Guaranteed to bring a smile...

Lily and Katey have been taking this dance class for the last few months. Yesterday was "recital" day, their "costumes" were swimsuits for the Under the Sea dance. Very fun! (I love Lily's knee knocking and Katey's head bobbing.)
